Scott-Kilvert Hut
Situated at Lake Rodway, the Scott-Kilvert Hut is a memorial to Ewen Scott and David Kilvert, teacher and student from Riverside High School, who both tragically perished in devastating circumstances during blizzard conditions while on a multi-day school excursion in the Cradle Mountain area in 1965. Within a year of the tragedy, the Hut was built by the Launceston Walking Club and parents and friends of the Riverside High School to honour Scott and Kilvert and to provide much needed shelter in the hope that such a tragedy would never again happen in the area. Building funds were raised from a public appeal with many individuals and organisations, including the North West Walking Club, giving support and assistance. Materials such as timber, gravel and stone were sourced near the building site where possible with all other materials being flown in by helicopter. A total of 10,000 hours of labour, accrued over 38 working days, resulted in a solidly built A-frame hut designed to withstand the harshest of weather conditions. The hut was officially opened on 3rd April 1966.
