Wombat Alluvial Hut

IIn the early 1900s, prospectors tok out a mining lease in search of alluvial tin at Wombat Creek, about 6 kms south of Waratah on Tasmania’s rugged west coast.

This miners hut was built on site and the 1935 newspapers which lined its walls were possibly the best indication of its age.

The accompanying photo was taken in 1964, however, sadly the hut is no longer standing.  During recreational pursuits in January 2023, several MHPS members visited this location and were able to confirm the site.  Unfortunately, all that remains are a few scattered remnants alongside an exploration track which probably dates from the 1980s.
