Lake Ball Hut - Walls of Jerusalem : Central Plateau

In the early 1970’s, (possibly ‘71 or ’72), it took just a couple of weekends for three men, Boy Miles, Wayne Spaulding and Kevin Cornish – with a young Ola How in tow – to build Lake Ball Hut, about halfway along the northern side of the Lake in the Walls of Jerusalem. Boy Miles had chosen the spot carefully so as to be well hidden and camouflaged in a dense stand of pines. It was constructed of split pine slabs, a shingle roof, with a stone fireplace, wooden chimney and a split paling floor.

The Hut is now under the management of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service. In 2003 the Hut was in need of major repair work with substantial rot and decay having set into the roof, chimney and walls. Under the management of the Tas PWS the work was carried out by a group of Mole Creek bushmen – Kerry How, Grant How, Baden How and Rob Harris – and early in 2022 further maintenance was completed by members of PWS and Mountain Huts Preservation Society.
