Fazackerley Hilton

Traditionally, forestry activities were conducted in an area of the Fazackerley Range, outside the boundary of the Tasman National Park, on the Forestier Peninsula in South East Tasmania. Logging practices ceased in the region several decades ago, but in the area between Cape Surville and MacGregor Peak near a narrowed overgrown section of Schofields Road sits a reminder of the days when forestry was a major industry.  A sawmiller’s hut with the unofficial name of the Fazackerley Hilton sits forlornly gathering moss in the dampness of the ever-encroaching forest.  Visited occasionally by bushwalkers, the single-roomed hut was most probably built during the 1960’s, is constructed mainly of wood and features a large chimney made from corrugated iron to accommodate the open fireplace.  Remarkably, it is still weatherproof despite having no known formal caretaker.
