Gunns Hilton – Little Lake

The hut known as the Gunns Hilton sits on slightly elevated ground in sight of Little Lake in the Arthurs Lake area of the central highlands.  It was built in 1956 by 18 members of the Cressy Fishing Club on privately owned land which was leased from the Von Bibra family by the CFC with rates paid to the Bothwell Council.  According to information supplied by Mr Doug Brooks who resides in Ulverstone, Peter Wallace and Bill Richardson convened a meeting to initiate the idea of building a hut.  This proved popular amongst members of the Fishing Club resulting in materials and building equipment being transported to the site by land-rovers and trailers over extremely rough vehicle tracks and the hut was built in a day and a half.  The original 18 members of the Cressy Fishing Club responsible for the hut’s construction were William Richardson, Peter Wallace, Ken Powell, Bernard Brooks, Hedley Hodgetts, Keith Richardson, Max Hughes, Bevis Tubb, Keith Preece, Vern Preece, Trevor Preece, Ray Williams, Eddie Casey, Frank Oliver, Alec Oliver, Murray Williams, Shounty Richardson and Doug himself (son of afore-mentioned Bernie Brooks).  Hedley Hodgetts and Bernie Brooks were in charge of the building process and commenced the foundations on a Saturday morning.  They were then joined by the other 16 members who completed the hut by 2 pm the following day. Vern Preece completed the stonework for the fireplace. It is reported that on completion of the building programme the members then “went fishing”.

Some years later when the Hydro took over the land the lease arrangements between the CFC and the Von Bibra family ceased.  The hut became open to the public and these days is frequented and cared for by dedicated anglers. Unfortunately, all early records, photos and paperwork relating to the hut were lost in a house fire suffered by Phil Roach.
Today, the hut is spacious well care for and well equipped with bunks and original open fireplace still intact.   In 2017 a new barrel heater was installed by Mick McCormack, David Wilson and Peter Wilson
