Old Waterfall Valley Hut
In the early 1950’s the Scenery Preservation Board awarded a tender to Tom McCoy to build a hut in Waterfall Valley at the northern end of the Overland Track. However, McCoy passed away in 1952 before work had commenced and the project was handed to Wally Connell, the head ranger at Cradle Mountain. The Hut was eventually built in the late 50’s from Pencil Pine spars and locally sourced timber. Sheets of roofing iron were carried from Waldheim, approx. 10 kms away. Over the years, Old Waterfall Valley Hut has had several changes including the replacement of the original spars with treated pine and the addition of larger windows. The chimney was also removed and a pot belly heater installed for a period. The nearby larger Waterfall Valley Hut was built in 1994. The Old Waterfall Valley Hut is still in use with bunks, table and water tank. Walkers are permitted to pitch tents on the surrounding grass area. Parks and Wildlife Service has plans to maintain the hut in keeping with its original character.
