Rebecca Stockmans Hut

The Rebecca Stockmans Hut is located on Temma Road on the West Coast.  It is the only surviving hut from more than a dozen which once existed in the Arthur and Pieman Rivers region.  The drovers huts were built as shelter for the stockmen driving cattle to the mining town of Zeehan in the early 1900s.  In early 2016 the Hut, on the banks of the Rebecca Creek, narrowly escaped wild fires which ravaged the Temma area.

Early in 2022 following advise from Heritage PWS that the hut required repairs to render it safe, along with restoration of some of its features, the manager of the Arthur River Field Centre contacted MHPS to discuss interest in a possible works programme.  As a result, an initial inspection by 2 MHPS members took place in April, followed by a 3 day working bee attended by 6 members in May.

Works included reinstating sections of concrete footings, as well as establishing suitable anchoring of the door post and re-hanging the door.  There was also some localised timber repairs, re-fastening of loose cladding and patching the corroded cladding sheets above the fire place and under the window.  All in all, a satisfying project for MHPS to be involved in as the hut holds significant value to locals and visitors alike.
