Deep in a section of the Tasmanian West Coast rainforest and perched on the banks of the Coldstream River is a magnificent shelter with the odd name of $1000 Hut.  People who know the hut well refer to it as “The Lodge” or simply the Coldstream Hut.  It is primarily 4×4 enthusiasts who access the hut via what has been described as possibly THE worst 4×4 track in Australia!  It is said the track is named $1000 because this is the extent of the damage caused to most of the vehicles who attempt the trip.                                                                                                                                 The Hut is believed to have been built by North Timber Products sometime in the 1980s or 90s. Approximately 10 years ago, some repairs were undertaken by a concerned group and at that time, rotting uprights were shored up with concrete and bunks were added.
