Iris Tin Mine Hut

Very little remains as evidence of the existence of the small settlement at the site of the Iris Tin Mine on Dolcoath Creek near Moina. Also known as the Red Robin Mine and Kemps Rainbow Mine, the Iris Mine provided a meagre living for the early prospectors who worked the tin and tungsten mine at the end of the 19th century and into the early 20th century. Living conditions were harsh and families faced many hardships due to the isolation and harsh environment of the area.  With the outbreak of World War 1 (1914-18) the small Middlesex mining field was virtually abandoned.   Nature has reclaimed much of the area and this hut, located under power transmission lines on Dolcoath Hill, is a poignant reminder of a by-gone era.
