Accommodation Paddock Hut

Up until the 1980s, huge mobs of sheep and cattle were driven to the high country for summer grazing in the Tasmanian Central Plateau.  Several huts could be found along the stock route to accommodate the drovers and cattlemen on overnight stops while the sheep or cattle would be corralled in holding paddocks.  These huts became known as Accommodation Huts and today they have all disappeared except for one.  Located at the Steppes Reserve, the single-roomed hut is built of timber with a solid wooden floor, contains a small window and has a corrugated iron roof.  A striking feature of the hut is its massive stone chimney which services the open fireplace.

In 2016 repair work, using the original mud and stone construction was carried out by PWS on the chimney which was in a state of near collapse.

In May of 2022, MHPS carried out repairs to the sub floor and floor structures, re-hung the door including the installation of a latching device, along with various other associated repairs and maintenance.  Later that same year, in September, the original window which had previously been removed for restoration was re-installed with a new sill.  This completed the works allocated by PWS Heritage Division.   Future hut maintenance will be conducted in partnership with MHPS and Tas PWS.
