John Jacques Memorial Hut
Sitting at about 1150m above sea level on the northern escarpment of Ben Lomond, is a functional stone hut built by Robert (Bob) McMahon who, prior to his death in 2013, was an environmentalist and recognised leader in the field of rock climbing. Having gained approval from the PWS and assisted by a dedicated group of friends, Bob McMahon built the hut as a practical shelter to accommodate climbers who frequented the challenging rock face and cliffs for which the mountain is renowned. The solidly built hut features simple comforts including an open fireplace and sleeping platforms capable of accommodating 10 or 12 people. John Jacques, after whom the Hut was named, was a friend of Bob McMahon and had assisted during the building process. After his passing John’s ashes were scattered in the vicinity of the hut.
