Gingerbread Hut

Gingerbread Hut is located near the summit of Mt Rufus in the Cradle Mt-Lake St. Clair National Park.  It was built by members of the Mount Rufus Ski Club who were mainly employees of the Hydro Electric Commission based at Bronte Park and Tarraleah.  It was constructed with the intention of using it as a ski tow hut, however the tow was never built.  When the HEC projects were completed and the population of the towns dwindled, the Mt Wellington Ski Club took over the responsibility for the hut.  With commanding views and a cosy loft in the upstairs section, the delightful little Gingerbread Hut could sleep 4-6 people and was popular with both skiers and bush walkers.

The Launceston Walking Club carried out some much-needed repairs and maintenance in the late 1990’s.  Reports indicate that more work has been done recently to make the hut comfortable and provide shelter and protection from the howling winds that frequent Mt Rufus.
