Lone Cabin
Lone Cabin was built in 1911 on the lower slopes of Mt. Wellington and was originally constructed from timber and bark. It was burnt down in the 1930s and rebuilt soon after. It was again destroyed in the 1967 wildfires but had been rebuilt again by 1970, this time primarily in dolerite stone. The Hut was one of only 2 huts on the mountain which were allowed to be occupied privately and permanently. Danny Griffiths occupied Lone Cabin for over 2 decades and was made an honorary ranger for Wellington Park. In his late 80s, Griffiths was forced to move off the mountain due to age related health issues and he died in 1957. The large stone chimney indicates an open fireplace; however, the Hut is for day use and emergency shelter only. Lone Cabin is managed by the Wellington Park Management Trust with City of Hobart responsible for maintenance.
