Deny King’s Boat Shed
The name Charles Denison “Deny” King is synonymous with Melaleuca and the Bathurst Harbour region in South-west Tasmania, where he operated a small tin mining operation following his return from WW2 in 1945. He built a house, established a garden and married and successfully raised a family in arguably the most isolated part of the State. He welcomed visitors, mainly bushwalkers, to the area and by the time of his death in 1991, aged 81, he had become known world-wide for his work as an environmentalist and his preservation efforts towards ensuring the survival of the orange-bellied parrots. About 1949/50, not far from his residence, he built a boat shed and landing area on Moth Creek. Still in use today, a wooden slipway enters the tannin coloured waters of the picturesque creek with the New Harbour Range forming the backdrop.
