Mt. Field Government Huts

Mount Field National Park is located 64 km northwest of Hobart – approx. an hour by car.  The Park celebrated its centenary in 2016 making it the oldest national park in Tasmania – a milestone shared with Freycinet National Park on the East Coast.

Located approximately 15 kms from the entrance to Mt Field N.P., on the Lake Dobson Road, the Government Huts are available for hire by walkers and families alike.

The Huts were originally situated on the Lake Dobson Road to accommodate workers during construction of the road in the late 1940’s. They were later transported to their current site and for more than 50 years have provided basic but comfortable accommodation for walking clubs, school groups, individuals and families. Within the complex each of the 5 huts consists of a separate bedroom with six bunk beds and vinyl covered mattresses, a kitchen area with a bench and sink with cold running water, table and seats, and a wood heater with ample wood supplied. However, users must take all bedding/sleeping bags, and all eating/cooking equipment and provisions.   It is essential to be self-sufficient with a gas stove or similar to heat water and cook as there is no power, gas or hot water laid on.  Likewise, it is important to have plenty of lights/lamps/head torches.

A communal toilet serves all 5 huts and there are no showers.

Surrounded by snow gums and with wonderful views of the surrounding alpine landscape, the Mt Field Government Huts are handy to the ski fields, Russell Falls, walking tracks and alpine areas and a short 10 minute walk to Lake Dobson. Wildlife is plentiful including wallabies, possums and birds.  Keep food covered and indoors to prevent possums from scavenging.

The Huts are available for hire at $45 per night/per hut. A National Parks Pass is also required. Dogs are not allowed.
