Kitchen Hut
Kitchen Hut sits on the plateau beneath the majestic backdrop of Cradle Mountain, located on the Cradle Mt.-Lake St Clair Overland Track. The iconic landmark is the first hut encountered by walkers heading north to south on the Overland Track and a favourite resting place for hikers undertaking the steep climb to the summit of Cradle Mountain. The original hut was built by Gustav Weindorfer in 1910 to cater for visitors and guests to his home near Dove Lake. In 1939 a single storey stone hut was constructed and in 1973/74 a second storey built of timber was added. The upper-level door was designed as an access and exit point during times of high snow drifts. In 2013/14, the Parks & Wildlife Service carried out extensive major repair work, both externally and internally at Kitchen Hut. The area is renowned for its snow, rain and strong winds along with its spectacular scenery during good weather. Kitchen Hut is for emergency shelter only and walkers are not permitted to stay in it overnight.
