Boy Miles Liena Hut
The name of 'Boy' Miles is synonymous with huts of the high country and the stories which go with the building of those huts. Already in this website, Boy Miles has been linked to several huts - Trappers Hut, Meston & Junction Huts, Lake Ball Hut, and his unfinished project on Deception Plain.
Some time prior to his death in 1978, Boy Miles occupied a hut in Liena. The structure is currently located on private property and comprises an old skin shed of split-slab construction, with adjoining single-roomed living section. The sawn timber living area resembles those of the sawmill era and was most likely transported by Boy to the site, possibly from one of the many sawmills which were common in the area in those earlier years. Boy then added the skin shed, which he used for the purpose of drying animal skins, while living in the connecting room.
MHPS plans to restore the hut on site at Liena and then transport it to a location for permanent display on Pioneer Drive in Mole Creek. Along with interpretive material, it is envisaged that the Hut will provide a wonderful asset in promoting the significance and historical importance of the traditional practices of trappers and snarers involved in the fur trade. It will also serve the two-fold purpose of honouring Boy Miles and telling the life story of a local identity—returned WW2 soldier, prison-of-war and legendary bushman.
MHPS is extremely appreciative for the full support of the Mole Creek Progress Association, which has offered co-operation and assistance with the project. Likewise, the property owners who have donated the Hut and have pledged support.
A couple of working bees have already been held to formulate plans and ascertain building requirements, and to secure and shore up the existing structure.
A development application was submitted to Meander Valley Council and a Planning Permit approved in October 2010.
